Under International Pressure, Norway Reunites Seized Children With Family

The Bodnariu family’s ordeal ends, but advocates vow to keep fighting for reforms.

A child welfare case in Norway that has been grabbing headlines and stirring protests worldwide came to a sudden end late last week.

The story, which I covered in depth for The Federalist in April, centers on Marius and Ruth Bodnariu and their five young children. Marius, a Romanian citizen, and Ruth, a native Norwegian, first ran afoul of Norway’s child protective services (called Barnevernet) in November 2015. After privately interviewing the family’s two oldest daughters at school, Barnevernet abruptly took all five children into emergency custody: first the girls, then the younger boys, and finally the three-month-old baby.

Annually, in Norway, nearly 10,000 children are taken away from their parents on a whim by Barnevernet, Norway’s Child Protective Services. WASHINGTON DC: The Bodnariu Case & Barnevernet (Norway)

UscapitolindaylightLast week, in Washington DC, Dr. Paul Negruț, Rector at Emanuel University in Oradea, together with Dr. Paul Susman, lawyer and member of the coordinating team in the Bodnariu Case, and Dr. Ilie Soritau, Prorector at Emanuel University, had meetings with officials and dignitaries of the United States Congress, to obtain assistance in relations with the Norwegian authorities, for the purpose of reuniting the Bodnariu family and the other Romanian families who’s children had been taken away. Norway: Other Serious Concerns in Bodnariu Case

In the last public statement, describing the first visit in almost three months when Marius Bodnariu could finally see the boys, we mentioned that the joy of the parents was dampened by some issues which at that time we chose not to make public yet.

Matei had a very bad scratch on his back and bruises, while Ioan had bruises on his face. When questioned by the parents for details, Barnevernet representatives didn’t give many explanations, downplaying these aspects. Peter Costea: O Norvegie fără milă – A NORWAY GONE BERSERK

Dragi prieteni,

După cum ştiţi în Decembrie am înregistrat o notă de protest la Ambasada Norvegiei din Bucureşti privind confiscarea copiilor familiei Bodnariu de către autorităţile norvegiene. De atunci au trecut două luni, timp în care mulţi m-aţi sunat ori scris întrebându-mă de situaţia curentă. În primul rând vă rog să continuaţi să vă rugaţi ca Dumnezeu să dea izbândă. Am convingerea că Dumnezeu a îngăduit această durere în familia Bodnariu ca în final lucrurile să se schimbe spre bine. Pentru mulţi. În al doilea rând, am scris un comentariu informativ privind abuzurile Norvegiei la adresa familiei Bodnariu şi a drepturilor parentale în general.
